It is said that there are two sides to every story (at the very least!), and there is no exception for the story of where our food comes from. Where do you stand on these controversial issues? What influenced your opinions? How can you persuede others to adopt your point of view? Propaganda is one method that, though often controversial, has proven to be a an effective way to have one's opinions heard - and to influence the ideals and actions of others.
Reflect on the numerous food issues discussed in class for this unit. Choose an area that interests you…. (organic, factory farming, all natural, over-fishing, seed patenting, etc.) Pick a side, establish an “angle” - can be "pro" or "con". Research the issue and familiarize yourself with opposing views. You may work in groups of 1-4, but larger groups will be expected to have increased complexity in thier projects.
Create an entertaining/eye catching “Public Service Announcement” that
catches the viewer's attention
presents your personal opinion
supports your opinion by informing on the issues
gives the viewer the information needed to follow up ontheir own.
Your finished project can be a poster, webpage, brochure, skit, commercial, music video, etc.
HELPFUL HINTS: Keep this in mind: Messages are more likely to be remembered when there is an emotion associated with it!! Choose an effective “literary tool” to get viewers’ attention. You should appeal to their senses of one or more of the following:
Compassion
Sympathy/Empathy
Sense of Humor (Comedy can be light or dark, use slapstick, sarcasm or satire, among others. Pop culture allusions are typically effective as well)
Horror/Revulsion/Shock
etc.
